ABOUT THE BOOK:Mandy Yeung Is a photo based artist living in Hong kong ,With this book, Mandy balances fine art, documentary and staged photography to create a visual record of his day-to-day life experiences.
For many, the fast-paced, anonymous life of the urban environment offers neither the time nor space for individualisation ,making it difficult to find a place of comfort and belonging.
For Mandy ,the sense of freedom and interdependence is intrinsic to his photography, making his work an idealised symbol of the promised land. He encourages us to engage with our deep, emotional longing to understand, articulate and visualise the complexity and universality of the human activity in the city of Hong Kong – to take us beyond our conditioned way of seeing and feeling.
ADVANCE PRAISE:Robin Peckham Editor-in-Chief, LEAP, Beijing
”If there is one word for Mandy Yeung’s photography, it is faithfulness. In the seven years that I have followed his work, I have seen the tone of his images shift and waver with the winds of Hong Kong’s social moods, as if he were allowing himself to be picked up and carried by everything around him. He does not document the world so much as he moves through it, and along the paths it offers. As a consequence everything about his photographs feels just right, a glimpse into a world that he fully inhabits by waiting and silently observing until he has grasped whatever needs to be grasped. I have never seen Yeung take a picture, but I can feel the process of how it must happen: he sits so quietly and for so long that he becomes a part of his scene, erasing the frame and considering the composition until every element at last drifts into the right place. Then, barely moving a muscle, the moment becomes a thing. Looking at the some hundred photographs collected here at once, we see all of these things piled together for the first time—a weighty yet carefully balanced structure of the now spread thinly across a life that is still young.”
